Building the knowledge behind successful breeder flocks

CAMPINAS, Brazil – Aviagen^® and Brazilian poultry company MBRF recently completed two editions of their Rearing Technical School, bringing together approximately 75 professionals in Chapecó, Santa Catarina, and Rio Verde, Goiás, to strengthen rearing management knowledge and support long-term Ross^® flock success.

Designed to connect scientific knowledge with practical flock management, the initiative covered reproductive physiology, breeder male and female management, and brooding practices that influence flock development and future reproductive performance. Together, the schools reinforced the shared commitment of Aviagen and MBRF to continuous learning, animal welfare and sustainability, and customer success.

Knowledge shapes flock success

According to Rodrigo Tedesco, Aviagen Technical Services Manager for Brazil, success begins long before birds reach laying age. “Today's chicken breeds offer tremendous genetic potential, but realizing that potential depends on the management they receive during the early weeks of life. Understanding the link between reproductive physiology and everyday management helps teams make informed decisions that contribute to robust, well-balanced flocks and more consistent results,” said Tedesco.

Liana Martinelli, MBRF Broiler Breeder Production Specialist, emphasized the value of connecting biological principles with the practical realities of poultry production across different regions. “The Chapecó and Rio Verde schools helped our teams deepen their understanding of reproductive physiology and how it applies to everyday flock management. A strong foundation during the rearing phase supports productive, healthy chickens, more predictable results and the high standards MBRF strives to achieve across our operations,” said Martinelli.

Understanding physiology and early flock management

Sessions explored the relationship between reproductive physiology and flock management during the rearing phase. Professor Ricardo Pereira discussed how early development influences future fertility, while Aviagen specialists shared brooding and breeder management practices that support healthy chick development and long-term flock success.

Practical learning and real-world data


Participants combined classroom learning with hands-on flock evaluations, using real-world data to assess management practices and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.



Working alongside Aviagen and MBRF specialists, they exchanged experiences, explored solutions to everyday challenges and strengthened their understanding of the factors that influence flock development and future performance, welfare and sustainability.
