New video explores how environmental management helps poultry producers support flock development from day one
CAMPINAS, Brazil – Aviagen® has announced the latest episode in its ‘Aviagen Minute’ video series, offering poultry producers practical guidance on three environmental management practices that shape chick development during the critical first week of life: temperature, moisture and ventilation.
Presented by Aviagen Brazil Technical Services Supervisor and broiler specialist Ivan Filippini, the video explains how these interconnected elements influence bird welfare, development and expression of genetic potential. According to Filippini, attention to these fundamentals during the first days after placement can have a lasting impact on flock success.
Getting temperature right from the start
The video emphasizes the importance of preparing the house environment before chicks arrive. Proper litter temperature and close monitoring of chick behavior help encourage feed and water intake while supporting healthy early development.
“When chicks become cold, their behavior changes. They are less likely to seek out feed and water and instead use more energy to maintain their body temperature. Proper temperature management during the first hours after placement supports the chick’s healthy development,” explained Filippini.
Managing moisture to reduce health risks
Filippini also highlights that optimal litter moisture supports good air quality and helps maintain healthy footpads.
“Careful moisture management during downtime between flocks and throughout the growing period serves as an essential safeguard for maintaining bird health and welfare,” he said.
Ventilation: Essential for bird health
Ventilation plays a critical role in maintaining optimal litter conditions by removing excess moisture and providing a continuous supply of fresh air to support bird health and comfort. The video explains why maintaining adequate ventilation is important even during colder weather.
He added that focusing on these management practices helps create the conditions for birds to thrive, supporting both high welfare standards and the consistent performance and productivity that producers rely on.
